Cornish Christmas Trees
Growing Christmas trees has been a dream of ours for many years, and it became a reality in October 2021 when we planted our first plantation at Tretawn Farm with the expert help of Festive Forestry, who placed them in the ground on a very precise grid!
It’s surprising how many people think the perfect Christmas tree only takes a couple of years to grow to its majestic best. In reality, it takes many years of nurturing to achieve the ultimate tree. Typically, a 6ft tree takes 7-8 years to grow and requires constant attention to ensure it isn’t too thin, sparse, or leggy. This care includes providing bird perches to deter birds from landing on the trees and breaking vital branches.
One of the most positive aspects of establishing our Christmas tree farm is the abundance of wildlife it attracts. In just two years, we have seen a significant increase in voles and mice, leading to regular sightings of kestrels, sparrowhawks, and even a pair of barn owls searching at dusk. One of the most beneficial predators has been the European ladybird, which protects our trees from aphid attacks. We plan to start a project with local schools to share some of these natural benefits with children.
We grow our trees to retail from our shed, alongside all the Christmas trimmings we carefully source and select each year. Over time, we will allow people to select their own tree from the plantations, and for that reason, we have planted several varieties.
We have had fantastic support from The BCTGA, Festive Forestry and Newburgh Christmas Trees, our thanks to them all.
Our Varieties
Nordman Fir (Abies nordmanniana)
Originating from the Black Sea region, this is now one of the most popular choices. It features dark green soft needles and excellent needle retention.
Norway Spruce (Picea abies)
The traditional Christmas tree, known for its excellent shape and scent. It can drop its needles if not properly watered.
Blue Spruce (Picea pungens)
Hailing from the Rocky Mountains, this tree has silvery-blue needles and a delicious piney scent, though it can be a bit prickly.
Noble Fir (Abies procera)
With striking blue-grey foliage, this strong tree is ideal for large decorations and is considered the king of wreaths.
Lasiocarpa Fir (Abies lasiocarpa)
Known for its soft blue needles, this variety is thick and bushy without being too wide.
Lodgepole Pine (Pinus contorta)
Very popular in the US, it features long branches and a very bushy appearance.
